An emerging term, not a settled one

What is vibe writing?

In its common AI-era use, vibe writing means guiding AI from an idea or rough material to finished writing through conversation and revision. AI may suggest, organize, draft, or edit. The person redirects the work.

Vibe Writing Hub's responsible-use model combines human intent, AI iteration, human judgment, and responsibility.

One phrase, three common meanings

People are using the same phrase for related but different practices. These meanings overlap in public use. They are not three official schools or definitions that exclude one another.

01Intent + execution

AI-directed writing

You describe the goal, provide context, and redirect the work. AI handles some of the structure, drafting, or editing.

02Dialogue + iteration

Conversational writing

The piece develops through ordinary back-and-forth. You respond to a draft, explain what feels wrong, and ask for a different approach.

03Feeling + form

Mood-first writing

The writer starts with mood, rhythm, fragments, or a desired emotional effect instead of a formal outline.

Vibe Writing Hub primarily covers human-directed AI writing: the first two meanings, with room for mood and creative intuition. In every version, the writer still needs to spot smooth writing that goes beyond the available knowledge or evidence.

Vibe writing depends on three actions

Do not just count the words AI generated. Ask who controls and can defend the decisions in the final text.

01

Steer

Provide the goal, facts, examples, limits, audience context, and feedback. “Make this better” is not clear direction. Explain what “better” means.

02

Judge

Choose, reject, check, and rewrite. Smooth output can still be false, generic, wrong in tone, or based on an idea you do not accept.

03

Own

Take responsibility for the final meaning and claims. If you cannot explain why a sentence is there, it has not yet become your decision.

This made-up example shows the decisions that a polished before-and-after version usually hides.

Human note

Our neighborhood library stayed open late during the flood. It wasn't really about books. People charged phones, found relatives, and heard what roads were closed.

Direction to AI

Give me three possible openings for a short newsletter reflection. Present the library as a practical public space, not a sentimental symbol. Do not add facts.

AI attempt

“When the flood came, the library became a beacon of hope for a community in crisis.”

Human final

During the flood, our library's most important shelves may have been the ones with power outlets. People came to charge phones, find relatives, and compare road closures. For one evening, its public value was measured less in books borrowed than in connections restored.

The lesson is not that AI failed.

It gave the writer a useful contrast. The writer saw that the emotional angle lacked support, rejected it, and returned to specific details. The direction and judgment were the vibe writing, not simply the model generating a sentence.

A term without one proven beginning

“Vibe writing” spread alongside vibe coding. But no reliable record proves that one person created the phrase or its current meaning.

Vibe coding provides the analogy

Andrej Karpathy publishes his widely shared description of vibe coding: directing AI in everyday language while deliberately keeping a loose relationship with the generated code.

An early exact-phrase use

Riley Brown describes what he calls a “vibe writing method”: record an idea by voice, then use AI and research to make a content script.

The revision loop is defined

JobQuest publishes a detailed explanation based on rough input, an AI draft, human feedback, and repeated revision.

Prompt-and-revise writing is shown

Visual Studio Magazine publishes an article with its prompt history. It shows the phrase being used to revise headlines, opening paragraphs, links, and transitions through repeated prompts.

Mood and creative flow become another meaning

Deleyna Marr uses “vibe writing” for a creative practice led by rhythm, energy, and intuition. This differs from using AI to generate a document.

The phrase enters product language

Microsoft uses “vibe writing” for an interactive way to create documents in Word. This shows that the phrase has entered product language.

AI is framed as a conversational editor

Tony Wan describes rounds of conversation that make rough ideas clearer. He stresses rejecting weak suggestions, checking sources, and resisting edits that flatten the writer's voice.

Not every AI draft is vibe writing

The label describes how you work with the text. It does not give you permission to publish work you do not understand.

Fits our working definition

  • Starting from notes, speech, examples, or a rough draft.
  • Asking for structures, alternatives, objections, or edits.
  • Redirecting the model when it misreads the purpose.
  • Rejecting smooth output that changes the point.
  • Checking claims and doing substantial rewrites.

Incomplete or outside it

  • Publishing an article from a single prompt without changes.
  • Letting AI decide what you believe or witnessed.
  • Treating citations from AI as verified sources.
  • Copying a voice without understanding the ideas behind it.
  • Using the label to avoid disclosure or rules that apply.

Why writers try it and what can go wrong

The same AI features can help or weaken the work. The result often depends on how carefully the writer reviews the model's first approach.

01
Possible gain

Momentum

Rough thoughts can quickly become outlines and drafts you can test.

Related risk

Anchoring

A smooth first answer can limit the options you consider next.

02
Possible gain

Alternatives

You can compare openings, explanations, objections, and structures.

Related risk

Writing that sounds alike

Common AI patterns can make different writers sound alike.

03
Possible gain

Language support

AI can help organize ideas when formal writing is difficult.

Related risk

Voice drift

Smooth wording can erase useful quirks and personal rhythm.

04
Possible gain

More ideas

AI can suggest questions and connections beyond your first approach.

Related risk

Claims beyond your knowledge

Convincing prose may go beyond what you can responsibly check or defend.

Evidence note

Research on writing with generative AI has not tested one standard “vibe writing” method. It has found that people completed selected professional writing tasks faster and that some AI-assisted short stories received higher ratings. The story study also found that assisted stories became more similar to one another. This shows the tension between quality and variety.

The vibe-coding connection, briefly

In both practices, people replace some direct production with directions in everyday language and repeated revisions. But writing is not code. You can test a program against defined behavior. Writing also carries meaning, evidence, voice, source credit, audience trust, and claims that may sound right but be wrong.

Our definition therefore differs from the deliberately loose “accept all” spirit in Karpathy's original example. Human review is not cleanup after vibe writing. It is part of the practice.

Questions people ask about vibe writing

01Who coined the term “vibe writing”?

No single origin has been proven. The earliest exact use of the phrase we found from the AI era is Riley Brown's public post from February 3, 2025, one day after Andrej Karpathy's vibe-coding post. This is an early documented use, not proof that Brown coined the term. Earlier uses may have been private, deleted, unrelated, or missing from search indexes.

02Does vibe writing always use AI?

Not in every public use. Some writers use the phrase for writing led by mood or intuition, without making AI essential. Vibe Writing Hub focuses on the AI-assisted meaning because it raises the most practical questions about authorship, accuracy, and process.

03Is vibe writing just another name for AI writing?

No. AI writing can mean anything from autocomplete to fully generated documents. Vibe writing usually involves giving directions in everyday language and revising through several rounds. Under our working definition, the writer must also judge, check, and take responsibility for the final text.

04Is vibe writing plagiarism or cheating?

The label alone cannot answer that. It depends on what was copied, what the writer disclosed, and whether sources and other people's work were used properly. The rules of the school, employer, client, publisher, or competition also matter. A fashionable name does not override those rules.

05Can vibe-written work be copyrighted?

It depends on the country or legal system and on the human contribution. In the United States, the Copyright Office says using AI does not automatically prevent copyright protection when a person determines enough of the expressive elements, or the choices that shape how the work is expressed. Prompts alone, however, generally do not establish authorship of AI-generated expression. This is a limited legal summary, not legal advice.

06Do I need a special tool or a giant prompt?

No. You can use a chatbot, document editor, voice workflow, or writing agent. A detailed prompt can help with a clearly defined task. For exploratory writing, several short rounds of direction, review, and correction often work better.

How we built this definition

Pages by people who use the method show that a meaning is in use. They do not prove that the method works. The research sources below support only the specific benefits or risks they tested.
